For Older People

Asks God to sustain older people with friendship, patience, and forward-looking hope as they face infirmity, bereavement, and the end of life.

Historical edition. Historical claims and instructions are preserved as historical context.

O THOU, whose years are throughout all generations, and who abidest though all else passes away; we pray for those whose days are far spent and whose appointed time to depart is drawing nigh. Amid the shadows of evening grant them the vision of Thy glorious morning. As the outward man perishes, may the inner man be renewed day by day. Teach them to bear with patience the infirmities of age. Comfort and sustain them with the hands of friendship and love and sympathy. In their ever-growing loneliness, as friend after friend departs, be Thou to them their faithful Companion, the same yesterday, to-day, and forever. Take from them all despair of the world; all regret of vanished days; all impatience with the plans and interests of the present time. Give them a forward look; a joyous faith; and when life's day is ended, grant them to lie down to rest in perfect peace and in the joyous assurance that Thou hast in store for them such good things as pass man's understanding. Hear this our prayer for our Saviour's sake. Amen.
