For Parents Grieving the Death of a Child

Asks God to console bereaved parents, sustain their faith amid the mystery of death, and comfort them with hope that their child rests in God.

Historical edition. Historical claims and instructions are preserved as historical context.

FATHER of Mercies and God of all Comfort! look in pity on these, Thy servants, whose joy has been turned into sorrow, whose house has been left unto them desolate. They have drunk of the cup of bitterness; wilt Thou not now give them the cup of consolation? Let not their faith die, nor their light go out in darkness. Give them the spirit of Him who learned obedience by the things which He suffered, so that like Him, they too may say, in meek and filial submission, "Not my will but Thine be done." Comfort them with the assurance that their loved one is at rest in Thee and will be remembered in the day when Thou makest up the number of Thy jewels. In this hour of trial draw Thy servants close to Thy love and help them to trust Thee and to believe that deeper than the pain and the mystery of death are the everlasting arms of Thy tender mercy. Hear our prayers for the sake of Him who is our only Mediator and Advocate, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.
