For a Person at the Point of Death

Asks God to comfort a dying person with peace, forgiveness, and trust in Christ’s resurrection, and to sustain hope of reunion.

Historical edition. Historical claims and instructions are preserved as historical context.

IMMORTAL Father, from Thee we come and to Thee we return. Hear our prayer for this Thy servant, who lies in great weakness, and who, to all human seeming, is about to depart hence. Strengthen and comfort him with a sense of Thy peace. Grant him to place his trust and confidence in Thy gracious promises; and then, though he walk through the valley of the shadow of death, he need fear no evil. Let him put his hand in Thine, and in quiet assurance pass with Thee, as a child with his father, to Thy home of love and joy and rest. Scatter Thou the clouds of sin and fear. Give him a spirit of penitence and hope. Sustain him with a vision of the blessedness which Thou hast prepared for them who, repenting their sins and failures, would be done with self and at one with Thee. Reveal Thy Son Jesus Christ in his heart as the Risen One who has conquered death and evil, not for Himself only, but for all the sinful children of men. Take Thy servant into Thy holy keeping, into the nearer embrace of Thy love and mercy. And grant that we may all meet at last in Thy many mansions above, through Jesus Christ our Blessed Lord and Saviour. Amen.
