LIGHT of our light, eternal Reason in whom our finite minds exist, and in whose creative powers they share; visit in mercy this Thy servant, who now stands under the shadow of a great calamity. We are mysteries to ourselves and know not the secrets of our mental life; but Thou art acquainted with all our ways and understandest our thought afar off. The inmost ground of our being is well-known to Thee, for Thou dwellest in us, Soul of our souls. Through hidden and marvellous ways, known only to Thee, Thou canst bring help to the distracted spirit, unity and control to the disordered imagination. Pierce Thou the gloom with Thy light; and let the beam in darkness grow until all the energies of mind shall be restored to their normal exercise. Turn aside the threatened ill, we beseech Thee, and let not Thy servant sink into the pit of despair. Show him some token for good that he may take fresh hope and rouse the forces of order and sanity against every thing that vexes or disturbs. Answer us for Thy mercy's sake. Amen.
