Three Prayers in the Hour of Death
A prayer from the Lutheran Treasury’s historical collection.
Historical edition. Historical claims and instructions are preserved as historical context.
A Prayer to God the Father
O GOD ALMIGHTY, Thou Father of mercy and God of all comfort, have mercy on me as a father has mercy on his children. Remember that Thy dear Son, Jesus Christ, became man for my sake. Remember Thou didst so love the world, that Thou gavest Thine only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
In this faith my soul cometh to Thee, bringing with it Thy dear Son, Jesus Christ, whom Thou hast given me. For His sake remember me and receive me into Thy grace. To Thee do I commend my soul. Let me, Thy dear child, forever, remain in Thy grace and show Thou mercy unto me, while I live and when I die; for the sake of Thy dear Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
A Prayer to God the Son
O LORD JESUS CHRIST, my only comfort and my only help, Thou hast borne my sickness and wast wounded for my iniquity. Thou art the Lamb of God that takest away the sins of the world.
Be Thou my righteousness, my sanctification, and my redemption. Heal my wounds with Thy stripes. Let Thy innocent blood not be shed in vain for me, and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me.
Do not forsake me in the hour of death, but help me through it to life eternal.
Remember that I am Thy frail sheep and Thou my faithful shepherd. Take me upon Thine arms and bear me into Thy paradise of bliss.
Let me behold the joy of Thy countenance and Thy glory. Amen.
A Prayer to God the Holy Ghost
O GOD THE HOLY GHOST, Thou only comfort of the distressed, strengthen and comfort my fainting and sorrowful heart. Preserve the faith Thou dost kindle in my heart and quench not the smoking flax. Guard me from the attacks of the evil one.
Let not my heart tremble nor despair at the sight of death; restrain my impatience, and make me inclined to yield to Thy will, O God, my Lord. Help me bring my life to a happy and joyful close. Keep my heart and mind in the peace of my Lord Jesus Christ. And when I am no longer able to speak, then preserve and seal the memory of the holy name of Jesus Christ in my heart; and with it let me fall asleep in peace. Amen.
