Historical edition. Historical claims and instructions are preserved as historical context.
EVER blessed Lord, the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we desire to begin another day in Thy fear. As we go forth to its duties, we ask Thy guidance. As Thou hast kept us during the night, and suffered no evil to come upon us, so do Thou keep us, blessed Lord, to the close of this day, and let us not sin against Thee.
Thou hast given us the places we fill in life. Make us contented, heavenly Father, with our lot. Preserve us from vain and fruitless striving after anything Thou seest it good to withhold from us, and help us to adorn the doctrine of our Saviour in all things.
We praise Thee for our liberty, for the protection of the laws, for our friends, and for all the comforts that are given to us. Every good gift cometh from Thee, blessed Father. Make us grateful to Thee, and useful to one another, and to all around us. Help us to keep the laws of our country, and bless all our fellow-subjects. We pray Thee for the President, and all in authority, that they may be a blessing to the people of this republic, and that they may have, after this life, crowns that fade not away.
Holy Father, we have sinned much against Thee. We live too much in forgetfulness of Thee, and too much in the fear of man. We do our duties without the due sense of Thy authority. We fail to have a single eye. We please ourselves when we ought to please Thee. We confess these our sins before Thee, and pray for Thy forgiveness, for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord.
We thank Thee, gracious Lord, that there is forgiveness with Thee, that Thou mayest be feared. Alas! we have often abused Thy mercy. We praise Thee for the gift of Christ, who died for our sins, and rose again for our justification. We pray that every one of us may be saved by Him. O Lord, take away the guilt of our sins. O Lord, set us free from the power of sin, and let not any iniquity have dominion over us.
Especially do we beseech Thee, Thou all-seeing God, for purity of heart. Put Thy Holy Spirit within each of us; and where He has already come unto us, may He dwell continually with us. O Lord, keep us from grieving Him by evil of any kind in our thoughts, or in our life. Let no sin be harbored in our minds: we know not into what evil we might be plunged, if left to ourselves. Leave us not, O God, but keep us by Thy mighty power, through faith unto salvation.
Keep all Thy people this day, heavenly Father, in peace. Give comfort to those who are suffering affliction. Pity the poor, and give the light of the Gospel to the ignorant. Comfort all the children of sorrow, and, according to the greatness of Thy power, do Thou preserve those who are appointed to die.
Hear us, Lord God, in what we ask for ourselves and for others, for the sake of Jesus Christ; and to Thee the Father, with the Son and the Holy Ghost, one Lord, be all honor and praise. Amen.
