BLESSED and everlasting Father, who hast loved us, and given Thy Son to be our Saviour, we thank Thee for thy word that we have now read together. We pray to Thy Holy Spirit to show us its meaning, and to write it on our hearts, so that it may form our principles and direct our steps. We adore Thee as our Maker, and own Thee as our Lord. We worship Thee in Jesus Christ Thy Son. We could not know Thee or come to Thee but in Him. We thank Thee for gracious invitations to the throne of grace; and we pray that the Holy Ghost may be in us as long as we live, as a spirit of grace and of supplication.
O Lord, our holy Father, we confess before Thee our sins. Our hearts cherish evil thoughts, and our lips utter perverse and foolish things. Our hands have often done evil. We have walked in the ways of sin. We have rebelled against Thee, and done wickedly. It is of Thy mercy that we are not consumed.
We do not try, heavenly Father, to deny or conceal our sin. We cannot atone for it; nor can we work out any righteousness of our own. Lord, save us; we perish. We wish to look unto Jesus that we may be saved. We trust in Him. Oh, receive us, and bring us through the perils of life, and through death, to heaven, for His name's sake.
We beseech Thee, most merciful God, to be with us this day in all we have to do. Make us diligent in our duties. Keep our consciences tender, that we may easily know the evil and turn from it. Let us not be afraid of men, so as to deny Christ. Oh, help us to do our common duties from love to Him, that He may be glorified.
Lord, give Thy blessing to us as a family. May all under this roof be kept by Thee. Let our tastes and wishes be within what Thou dost give us of earthly blessing. Save us from all sinful waste, self-indulgence, and folly. Guard every one of us from temptation to little sins, that we fall not by-and-by into great sins.
We pray for Thy blessing, O Lord, on our engagements for the day. Help us to satisfy every just expectation of Thy people. Let us be a blessing and not a curse. Oh, that we may feel that we are not our own, but that we are bought with a price, even the precious blood of Jesus.
Our Father, hear us when we thus call upon Thee, for Thy Son our Saviour's sake. Amen.
