Week 1 Saturday Morning Prayer
A morning prayer of humility and gratitude, asking forgiveness through Christ, understanding of Scripture, and faithful duties.
Historical edition. Historical claims and instructions are preserved as historical context.
ETERNAL GOD! with deep humiliation we would this morning bow before Thy throne of grace. Thou art infinitely great and good. Thou art worthy of the adoration of all Thy creatures, for Thou art possessed of boundless knowledge, unlimited power, unerring wisdom and infinite goodness.
We rejoice that Thou art a God of mercy, and that Thou delightest to receive and pardon the vilest and the guiltiest who come to Thee through Christ in penitence and prayer. In the name of Christ we now approach and bend around the family altar. In that name alone would we ever be found addressing our prayers to Thee. We would not come in our own name. We dare not speak of any righteousness of our own, for we feel and confess that we have been great sinners. But we rejoice that even for such as we are, a great salvation has been provided.
We praise and bless Thee, O God, that Thou didst so love the world as to give Thine only-begotten and well-beloved Son, that He might come down to this world, and by His obedience unto death, procure a full pardon and a free salvation for all who should believe on His name.
We earnestly plead that for His sake Thou wilt grant to us the forgiveness of our sins. Be pleased, O Lord, of Thy great compassion to blot them all out of the book of Thy remembrance, and to write all our names in Thy book of life.
Grant that by Thy Holy Spirit enlightening us, we may clearly understand the truth which Thou hast taught us in the Holy Scriptures. Enable us to see the suitableness and sufficiency of Christ as our Saviour. Implant in us all that faith which unites the soul to Christ. Grant that by the Holy Ghost, we may so believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, that to us there shall be no condemnation, and that we shall have present and perfect peace.
O our Father, accept in Christ's name our grateful thanks for all Thy kindness and care manifested toward us through the past night. We bless Thee that, while others were tossing on beds of pain and sickness, we slept; and while they are this day confined to chambers of affliction, we are permitted to assemble here with much comfort.
We have not deserved the least of Thy blessings, yet they have been great and manifold. Accept, O our Father, our grateful thanks.
Permit us also to plead for dear friends who may be in sickness or in affliction. Be pleased to relieve them from suffering. Restore them to health. Sanctify to them their afflictions.
Entering on the duties of another day, we commit us to Thy kind care. Preserve us, we pray Thee, from all dangers. Keep us in the hour of temptation. Give us grace diligently and faithfully to perform our duties, and to walk before Thee in holy fear, and with loving hearts, as Thy dear children.
We will now ascribe unto Thee, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, all honor and glory for ever. Amen.
