Prayer for Pardon After Returning to Sin

Return to God after failing in your resolutions and ask for renewed mercy.

Historical edition. Historical claims and instructions are preserved as historical context.

O LORD Jesus Christ, thou overflowing Fountain of all mercy, behold, I thy wretched and unhappy creature return once more to thee, and accuse myself in the bitterness of my soul that I have not kept my resolutions, but have again fallen into my former sins; that I have served thee with extreme negligence, and have been lukewarm and careless in my devotion to thee and love of thee; that I have too much entangled myself in vain and transitory things, and have far too eagerly sought earthly and hurtful pleasures; and that in these and innumerable other ways I have many times offended thee, the sweetest Spouse of my soul. And although thine essential blessedness, O my God, can neither be increased nor diminished, because thou canst have no need of me or of my goods, nevertheless my sinful and careless life does in some sort tend to the notable prejudice of thy honour and glory. Thou knowest, O my God, what sorrow I now have, or at least what sorrow I ought to have, in my heart for all these my sins. Wherefore, O most tender Father, I confess to thee with most bitter contrition of heart all those sins whereof thou knowest me to be guilty; most humbly beseeching thee that thou wouldst supply whereinsoever I have failed through malice, or wickedness, or carelessness, from the treasures of that mighty love, the fulness of which rests on him who now sitteth at thy right hand, bone of my bone, and flesh of my flesh. For it is through him, in the power of the Holy Ghost, in union with his princely compassion, humility, and reverence, and in the measure of the power thou hast given me; it is through him that I pour forth before thee my lamentation and my complaint, by reason of my exceeding misery and grief for having so often offended thy divine munificent goodness in thought, in word, and in deed. I offer and set forth before thee now, in satisfaction for all my negligences and for the blotting out of all my iniquities, that surpassing prayer of thy most beloved Son, that prayer rendered so fervent by the anguish which wrung from him his sweat of blood, so devout by the purity and simplicity of his innocence, and so availing by the glowing love of his Divinity. Amen.
