TWENTY-FIRST WEEK.—LORD’S DAY. — Morning

A Sabbath morning prayer for reverent worship, spiritual light, fruitful hearing and family unity.

Historical edition. Historical claims and instructions are preserved as historical context.

READ IN HOLY SCRIPTURE LEVITICUS XXIV. 1–16.

MOST gracious God, we bless Thee for another day of the Son of Man. May we be in the Spirit on the Lord’s day. May we reverence it as the holy of the Lord, honourable, and call it a delight; and may we be glad when they say unto us, “Let us go into the house of the Lord.”

O Lord, great reverence is due unto Thee in the meeting of thy saints, and holiness becometh thine house for ever. May we be sanctified to draw nigh unto Thee, and before thy people may we glorify thy great and blessed name. Oh, send out thy light and thy truth. Let them lead us: let them bring us to thy holy hill, and to thy tabernacles. Show unto us thy beauty and thy glory, and satisfy us with the goodness of thy house, even of thy holy temple.

O Thou that dwellest between the cherubim, shine forth. Our minds are blinded through the deceitfulness of sin. Our foolish hearts are darkened; but Thou art light, and in Thee there is no darkness at all. Oh, shine in our hearts, and give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the grace of Jesus Christ. Do Thou anoint thy servants, who minister in thy house, with the gifts of the Spirit. May their lips keep knowledge, that we may hear the law of the Lord at their mouth. Enable us to take heed how we hear.

O Lord, we rejoice to believe that there is meat enough and to spare in our Father’s house. Feed our souls this day with that Bread of Life which came down from heaven. May He who is that Living Bread be sweet unto our taste and precious to our souls. May we experience the truth of his own saying, “The words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.” May they be profitable unto us for doctrine and for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness.

O God, let us not be forgetful hearers of the Word, but doers also of the work. When we leave thy courts, let us not leave Divine things behind us. May we give men increasing cause to take knowledge of us that we have been with Jesus, and that we have learned of Him. May we sanctify the Lord God of Hosts in our hearts, and make Him everywhere our fear and our dread. Grant especially, O our heavenly Father, that the name of our dwelling may be, “The Lord is there.”

As a family, may we live together in unity, and be all made, through grace, members of the household of faith, washed, and sanctified, and justified, in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

These things, O God, we humbly ask in the name and for the sake of thy blessed Son; and unto Thee be all the glory. Amen.
