READ IN HOLY SCRIPTURE 1 COR. XIII.

GREAT God of love, and grace, and truth, we adore, we praise, we glorify Thee. Thou art our Father in Christ, and Thou art our King. All thy laws are wise, all thy words are true, all thy ways are good, all thy works are great. We thank Thee for the privilege and ordinance of prayer. Help us now to worship Thee in spirit and in truth. Accept us in the Son of thy love. Answer us according to thy wisdom, and mercy, and faithfulness. Oh, our Father, we thank Thee for the grace given us by the Holy Ghost! If we have passed from death unto life, if we have laid aside the foolish things of sin and unbelief, it is because Thou hast taught us. Every good gift, and every perfect gift, has been from Thee. We thank Thee for all Thou hast wrought in us. Because Thou hast given, we ask Thee still to give such things as may be good. Keep us from pride of heart, even from every form of that pride which is so unseemly and offensive in thy presence. Lord, give us faith in thy dear Son, in his atoning blood, in his prevailing intercession, in his coming glory. Lord, give us a well-founded hope that our souls shall be saved in the day of his appearing. We ask for spirituality of mind and heart. We pray that Thou wouldst make us a consecrated people to thy praise.

Oh, our Father, teach us how truly to love Thee and to love all that bear thy image! Help us to be unselfish. Write thy new name upon our hearts—thy name of love. We thank Thee for the mercies of the day which is about to close. Father, help us to remember the heaven where there is no night. Teach us to look for the home in which we shall see face to face. Enable us, before sleep closes our eyes, to have a living look to Jesus. Teach us to know that our sins have been covered and cancelled through the blood of sprinkling. Give us the comfort of the Holy Ghost, the seal of our sonship, the witness of our acceptance in the Beloved. Shed thy light upon all our souls. Thou knowest what we are and what we need. Oh, suit thy gifts to our necessity! Bless us in body and in soul. Be with us in life and death.

[Look upon our children, and make them thy children also.]

Watch over our home, and make us to be of the household of faith and family of God. Sanctify, strengthen, guide, deliver us. We would be ever thine, altogether thine, all thine. Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. So shall we love Thee, so shall we live for Thee, so shall we live with Thee for ever. Lord, hear our prayer, for Christ our Saviour’s sake. Amen.
