HOLY Lord God Almighty, who dost from thy throne behold all the dwellers upon earth, regard us favourably as now we worship Thee. May we ever remember, in our approaches to Thee, that the place where we stand is holy ground. It is infinite condescension in Thee to listen to our praises and prayers; for we are as yesterday, and know nothing, while Thou art the great “I Am,” the ever-living God. Yet though Thou art the high and lofty one, encouraged by thy gracious invitation, we look up to Thee, and ask that thy blessing may rest upon us all this day. Help us conscientiously to fulfil its various engagements, that we may glorify Thee. Give us bodily strength for every duty. Control our minds and hearts, that we may think and feel aright. Thus may all our powers be consecrated to Thee; and we remember, when we have done this, that of thine own have we given Thee.
We adore Thee for the many tokens of thy love and care with which thy people have been favoured in the past. Thou hast preserved thy Church amid the dangers by which it has been assailed. Though the bush has been surrounded by fire, yet hast Thou not suffered it to be consumed. No weapon formed against thy servants has prospered.
We thank Thee, O God, that thy promises extend to every one of thy people, and that like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear Him. Thou knowest their sorrows, and wilt not lay upon them more than they can bear. We bless Thee for the assurance of thy loving pity. May it be enjoyed by us even when the shadow of grief passes over our dwelling.
We thank thee that no obstacles prevent us from worshipping Thee; that in our sanctuaries and homes we can offer the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and call upon the name of the Lord. We bless Thee for the inestimable privileges we possess in this favoured land. Truly, the lines have fallen to us in pleasant places. May we understand our responsibilities; as much has been given to us, may we love much, and serve Thee heartily.
Yet, Lord, grant that, amid all our mercies and enjoyments, we may remember we have not yet come to our rest. Help us to live as pilgrims and sojourners, who have here no continuing city, anticipating one in heaven, where, in the everlasting sunshine of thy smile, our wanderings and our woes shall be forgotten; where we shall behold thy face in righteousness, and being made like unto Thee, shall enter into the joy of our Lord. Prepare us for that eternal home; and grant us all needful blessings, with the pardon of all our sins, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our atoning High Priest and Advocate. Amen.
