SEVENTH WEEK.—SATURDAY. — Evening

An evening prayer for reconciliation through Christ, victory in temptation and blessing on the world.

Historical edition. Historical claims and instructions are preserved as historical context.

READ IN HOLY SCRIPTURE ST. LUKE VII. 1–23.

O GOD, our Father, we come into thy presence this evening as thy children, claiming the privilege we have of drawing near to Thee in the Son of thy love. Jesus Christ is our brother; we are one with Him. And, as Thou dost not refuse to hear Him, Thou wilt not refuse to hear us.

Sprinkle our consciences afresh with the precious blood of Christ. We have sinned to-day, often and greatly; but now we bring our sins and spread them before Thee. O our Father, we thank Thee that He has made reconciliation for the sins of thy people, and that Thou wilt forgive, and dost forgive. We are grieved that we so grieve Thee. We rejoice that Thou dost blot out our iniquities and rememberest our sins no more.

Heavenly Father, we are beset with many enemies. In our own strength we cannot resist them; but we trust in our High Priest, who has himself suffered, being tempted. We know that He sympathises with us in our worst temptations. O Jesus, succour us; give us the victory. We cannot fight except Thou fight for us; we cannot conquer except Thou conquer for us. We can do nothing; and yet, through Thee and in Thee, we can do all things.

O our Father, look in mercy on those who are near and dear to us. Bless them, wherever they are. If they are not thine already, make them thy sons and daughters by faith in Christ Jesus. If they are thine, fill them with all the riches of thy grace.

Pour forth thy Spirit. May the Holy Ghost work mightily in all hearts, in miracles of grace and gifts, according to his own will, gathering multitudes to Christ from every nation, and people, and kindred, and tongue, and giving to each believer fresh power, fresh light, fresh joy, and fresh love.

Our God and Father, bless, we beseech Thee, thy suffering people in every part of the world. Enable those in sorrow to cast their sorrows on the loving heart of Jesus. Be with those who, in every land, are preaching the everlasting Gospel, and grant them great success. May all thy people glorify thy name, and shine as lights in the world.

Bless our Queen and our country. May thy name be honoured in our councils, and be a wall of fire around us. Watch over us this night. Let none be satisfied to sleep unsaved. We thank Thee that, whether asleep or awake, living or dying, in Jesus we are safe. Keep us under the shadow of thy wings, and fill our hearts with joy and peace in believing.

We ask all in the name of Jesus, thy dear Son, to whom, with Thee, O Father, and the Holy Ghost, be glory, praise, and power, henceforth and for evermore. Amen.
