READ IN HOLY SCRIPTURE PSALM XXXVI.
O GOD our Father, most gracious and compassionate, we thank Thee that the light of another day has dawned on us, and that we are permitted again to approach Thee in social worship, in the name of thy dear Son Jesus Christ. Be with us, we beseech Thee, and let thy Holy Spirit help our infirmities while we call upon Thee. We thank Thee for the portion of thy Holy Word which has just been read; and we pray that the savour of it may be in our hearts continually. May the fear of God be ever before our eyes, that we wander not into the ways of the transgressors, who delight in the works of iniquity, who devise mischief on their beds, and abhor not that which is evil. Lord, Thou knowest how often and how grievously we have sinned against Thee. We have trodden in dangerous ways, and Thou only hast known the greatness of our peril; but, blessed be thy holy name, thy mercy is in the heavens, and thy faithfulness reacheth unto the clouds. Thou, Lord, art the God who delightest in showing mercy and forgiveness. Oh, visit us with thy forgiving mercy, so shall we put our trust under the shadow of thy wings, and be abundantly satisfied with the river of thy pleasures. Lord, make us to know Thee in Christ Jesus as the Fountain of Life, and in thy light grant that we may see light. Continue to us thy loving-kindness, and give us a full experience of thy righteousness, even the righteousness of our God, which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all who believe. We look for a free justification by thy grace in Christ Jesus, whom Thou hast set forth to be a propitiation, through faith in his blood, for the remission of sins that are past, that Thou mightest be just, and the justifier of those who believe in Jesus our Lord.
O our Father, when the workers of iniquity are falling around us, do Thou uphold us in righteousness; and when the foot of pride and the power of this world’s wickedness are striving against us, interpose mightily for our deliverance. Help us ever to cast our care upon Thee, assured that Thou carest for us. Make us to delight in holiness; and to that end, we pray Thee, fill us with thy Spirit. Increase our faith, and every other Christian grace, and incline and enable us to promote thy glory in all we think, and say, and do. Bless us as a family, according to our several states and circumstances, and extend a like blessing to our dear relatives and friends, even the blessing which maketh rich, and with which no sorrow is added. We ask these, and all other needful things, in the name and for the sake of Jesus Christ thy Son, our Lord. Amen.
