READ IN HOLY SCRIPTURE PSALM LXVIII. 1–19.
O GOD of our salvation, our voice shalt Thou hear in the morning. We thank Thee for having watched over us through the night, for having refreshed us with sleep, and for bringing us in health and comfort to the beginning of another day. Defend us throughout its hours, and grant that we may not fall into any sin, neither run into any kind of danger. Thou art able to keep us from evil, and to comfort and support us in all the trials and duties of life. Thou hast been the refuge and helper of thy people in all generations. Thou didst guide thine ancient people in the wilderness, and encompass them with miraculous tokens of thy presence and care. Thou didst lead them to the goodly land promised to their fathers, refresh and confirm them in its possession, and provide of thy goodness for the poor. Guide us, we humbly pray Thee, through the pilgrimage of life, and give us day by day our daily bread. In mercy feed us with the bread of life. Cause us to drink of the living water that flows, for our refreshment and salvation, from Jesus Christ, the smitten Rock; and bring us to that better country which Thou hast promised to all them that love and serve Thee.
We thank Thee for the gracious revelation Thou hast made of thy character and will to the children of men, and we would rejoice in Thee as the all-sufficient God. A Father of the fatherless and a Judge of the widow art Thou. Thou openest the eyes of the blind. The outcast and forsaken are remembered by Thee. Thou hast sent thy dear Son, in our nature, to open the prison doors to them that are bound, and to set at liberty them that are bruised. Thou hast given the Word of salvation, and great is the company of them who preach it. Soon may the joyful tidings of repentance and remission of sins be preached in the name of Jesus among all nations. May those who are now afar off be made nigh. May those who are now degraded and dishonoured by the practice of sin be purified and forgiven, and be adorned by the beauty of holiness.
Thou wilt in very deed dwell with man upon the earth. We thank Thee that when Christ ascended on high he obtained gifts for men, even for the rebellious; and we bless Thee that the Divine Spirit has been shed abroad. May He take of the things of Christ and reveal them to us, so that Jesus may dwell in our hearts by faith, and our bodies may be temples of the living God. Daily would we bless Thee, as we are constantly loaded with benefits, and always would we rejoice in Thee as the God of our salvation. Be pleased to accept our worship, to pardon our sins, and to supply our various wants, for the sake of Jesus Christ. Amen.
