Read in Holy Scripture Isaiah XL. 1–11.
O GOD, whose providence ordereth all things in heaven and earth, glory be to thy great Name for the mercies of this day. If we have had strength for the daily task; if we have been protected in the midst of dangers; if home comforts have been ours; if we have had peace in the midst of much to trouble us, and a secret sense of thy love hath sweetened our toil, it is all of thy favour. If we have been steadfast in the face of temptation, not unto us, O Lord, but unto thy Name be all the praise. For these, and all thy gifts, we adore thee, O thou Fountain of grace and Father of mercies. We did not deserve thy goodness, but Thou hast had mercy, and even now waitest to be gracious. Oh, add to all thy gifts the gift of a thankful heart, that we may be stirred up to see what we can render to Thee for all thy benefits.
We come to Thee, O God, just as we are: sinful, do Thou forgive us: guilty, do Thou cleanse us: unholy, do Thou sanctify us: ignorant, do Thou teach us: in a world of sorrow, do Thou comfort us: uncertain of life, for all flesh is as grass, do Thou establish our faith in thy Word, which standeth fast for ever; and give us the hope of a blessed immortality. Oh, that the glad tidings of thy Gospel may melt our hearts anew, and make them contrite and believing. Level whatever hinders the perfect work of thy Spirit within us. Break down all pride and conceit of our own goodness. Cast out all self-righteousness. Humble us, O God, by thy teaching and discipline. Make us meekly submissive to all thy will. In all things prepare us for the coming of Jesus in the power and glory of the Father, to judge the living and the dead. Oh, that in that day we may be found of Him in peace, without spot or stain.
Lord Jesus, Thou art the good Shepherd of the sheep. Thou stoopest to the youngest and weakest of thy flock, bearing them in thine arms, and carrying them in thy bosom. Regard with special favour the children of this household. Convince them of their own sinfulness, and unfold to them the meaning of thy Cross and Passion. Have pity on the unconverted among us. Spare them, O God, and by thy Spirit root out their hardness of heart and unbelief. Forbid it, Lord, in thy mercy, that even one of us should neglect thy great salvation.
Take us now under thy protection. Pour out thy choicest blessings on all whom we love. Strengthen the hands of thy ministers. Magnify thy grace in the conversion of souls. Make known thy glory far and wide, that all the world may see it; and hasten thy kingdom. We ask all through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
