Week 2 Sabbath Morning Prayer

A Sabbath morning prayer for attentive worship, conversion, faithful preaching, and comfort for sick and sorrowful people.

Historical edition. Historical claims and instructions are preserved as historical context.

O LORD, most blessed and most holy, our Creator and the God of our salvation, we thank Thee that, after another week's labors, we are brought in Thy kind providence to the day of holy rest. May the Holy Ghost so work in us this day that our hearts shall be in harmony with the day, and the holy objects to which it is devoted.

We give Thee thanks for last night's sleep. We praise Thee that we are in sufficient health to enter upon the enjoyment of gospel privileges. We bless Thee for giving them unto us. Thou hast sent us the inspired word that instructs us. May we read it and hear it preached with meek and teachable spirits. Thou hast given us the ministry of the word and the house of prayer. Give us also, we beseech Thee, the help of the Holy Ghost, that we may worship Thee in spirit and in truth.

O God, we cannot tell how soon our day of grace may end. Let none of us remain without a new heart and a right spirit. Thou hast taught us that, except we be converted and become as little children, we cannot enter into the kingdom of heaven. May every one of us, being converted unto Thee, have, through the Lord our Righteousness, a title to everlasting life. May we all, according to our need, receive from the fulness of Jesus Christ, so that we may be satisfied in our souls from Him.

We pray that Thou wouldst grant us the Holy Spirit to renew us after Thy blessed image, and create us anew in Christ Jesus unto good works, that we may be qualified for serving Thee, and made meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light. May the throne of iniquity within us be taken down, and the throne of God and the Lamb set up. Constrained by the love of Christ, may we always judge that we are bound to live not to ourselves, but to Him who died for us and rose again. If any of us are disposed to delay securing an interest in the Saviour whom Thou hast sent, convince us of our sin and folly. Show us that now is our accepted time and day of salvation. And may we give all diligence to make our calling and election sure.

[May the children in this family, and the young everywhere, remember their Creator in the days of their youth, and know the blessedness of those who seek Thee early and find Thee.]

We pray Thee, good Lord, to rule in our hearts this day. Let there be nothing in our pursuits to unfit us for Thy holy service, or to hinder the free course of Thy word. Enable us to spend the whole day in the public and private exercises of Thy worship, except so much as is taken up with works of necessity or mercy.

We pray Thee, most merciful Father, to bless all who are to preach the word this day. Give them grace to be faithful. Help them to speak in the power of the Holy Ghost. Help also in their work all Sabbath-school teachers, and all others who in any way seek to labor for Christ this day. Put upon them Thy Spirit, and crown their efforts with abundant success. Revive Thy work in Thy church, and add unto her daily such as shall be saved. O Lord, there are great multitudes without the Sabbath blessings we enjoy. Let it please Thee to enlighten the nations with the light of Thy word. Bless Thy servants who have gone forth to preach the Gospel among them. Take hindrances out of their way. Give them favor in the eyes of chiefs and rulers. The idols do Thou, O God, utterly abolish, and make the kingdoms of the world the kingdoms of thy dear Son.

O Lord, we beseech Thee to give Thy blessing to all for whom we are bound to pray. Remember in Thy mercy our dear relations and friends, old and young. Give the sick the comfort of Thy presence. Comfort also the sorrowful and desolate. Save the dying. Make Thy way known upon earth, Thy saving health unto all generations. Let that time soon come of which Thou hast spoken unto us, when the heathen shall be Christ's inheritance.

O God of the Sabbath, who only hearest prayer hear Thou us in these our requests; and what we fail to ask because of our ignorance, yet do Thou grant unto us according to the riches of Thy grace in Christ Jesus, our Redeemer. Amen.
