Week 2 Monday Morning Prayer
A morning family prayer for gratitude, kindness at home, contented labor, spiritual renewal, and public peace.
Historical edition. Historical claims and instructions are preserved as historical context.
O GOD, our heavenly Father, from whom we receive every good thing, Thou didst permit us last night to cast ourselves upon Thy care. We asked safety and peace, and Thou hast watched over and strengthened our bodies with the rest of the night. And now we come to Thee to thank Thee. We do not deserve this, or any other of the proofs of Thy goodness that we enjoy. Receive our thanks, O Thou Preserver of men, and deepen in our hearts the feeling that we are safe because we are kept by Thee.
And now we join together as a household in asking Thee to be with us, as a father to his children; Oh! enable us to look up to Thee as children to a father. Keep us in comfort and safety this day. Give us our daily bread, and order all our steps. Let there be nothing, O our Father, in our life as a family, to grieve Thy Spirit, or to drive away Thy blessing. Show unto us what we owe to one another, and make us kind, gentle, and helpful to each other. Keep us from all fretfulness, sinful anger, and rash speaking. Guard us against errors and mistakes, and give us in all things the wisdom that cometh from above. O God, give Thy blessing upon our labors this day, and help us to engage in them with contented minds; for Thou, Lord, hast fixed our lot and given us our work to do. May we be made happy and prosperous as a household through Thy good blessing resting upon us.
We pray Thee further still, heavenly Father, for the spiritual blessings that our souls need. Oh, may each of us have full and free forgiveness of sin through the redemption that is in Christ. Grant us the peace of believing. Oh, give us Thy holy Spirit, that He may put down the evil that is in each of us, and make us pure in heart. May each of us this day strive to die unto sin. Help us, O God, to live unto Thee: Thou hast made us for Thy glory. Keep this, we beseech Thee, ever in the thoughts of our hearts, and let us live as becomes those who are looking to the Lord Jesus for eternal life. Thou, God, searchest the heart of each of us. Let no secret sin lurk within us to destroy our peace, and break out into open rebellion against Thee.
We pray Thee, O God the Lord, to bless our land with peace and true prosperity. Let there be employment and bread for the poor. Keep the rich from trusting in uncertain riches. Bless those who are in power and authority, and help them to rule in Thy fear. Pour out Thy Spirit on the churches, to revive them, and make us a blessing among the nations.
O God our Father, we join in offering these thanks and prayers to Thee in the holy name of Jesus, our only High Priest, to whom be glory for ever. Amen.
